Columbia Pictures had originally set the film for a January 29, 2016, release. On April 30, 2015, they pushed the release date forward to January 22, 2016.

A Sony leaked email revealed that Viggo Mortensen, Russell Crowe, Jason Clarke, Matthias Schoenaerts, James Badge Dale and Ethan Hawke were considered for the role of Vosch, ranked from first to sixth respectively. Guy Pearce, Demián Bichir, Luke Evans, Ben Foster, Joel Edgerton and Jared Leto were also considered. The part went to Liev Schreiber.
