This is a remake of the Academy Award winner film from Argentina, The Secret in Their Eyes (2009).

Julia Roberts's mother passed away during the production. Roberts returned to filming five days after the loss of her mother.

Julia Roberts' role was initially was earmarked for a male actor, but director and screenwriter Billy Ray rewrote it specifically for the actress.

Julia Roberts personally handpicked Nicole Kidman to be her co-star. She sent her an email going; "Will you do this with me?".

This is the first collaboration between the two actresses Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman. Both actresses have been working since the 1980's, both won their Academy Award in the early 00's, and both have been among the highest paid actresses in the movie industry. According to the director 'Billy Ray' there was a healthy working relationship between the two; "There was enormous respect, great camaraderie, and, in my opinion - I don't know if either of them would ever admit to it - there was a very healthy, kind of athletic level of competitiveness. They both had such regard for each other and they both wanted to do their best because the other was in the movie."

Development on the film originally began at Warner Bros Pictures in 2010. In 2011, Denzel Washington was offered the role, while an October start date was planned the same year, with filming taking place in Atlanta. However, Warner Bros decided to let go off the film and the project was stalled for years, until the independent company IM Global decided to move forward with the project. Casting began in early 2014 and filming consumed in January 2015. By the time of the release, Billy Ray will have spend five years on the project.

Chiwetel Ejiofor is 10 years younger than both of his female co-stars Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman. In the original, the male lead was 12 years older than the female counterpart.

Gwyneth Paltrow was originally cast in the lead role, however, she dropped out and Nicole Kidman replaced her.

The director of the original film, Juan José Campanella, worked as an executive producer on this remake.

Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman were to previously star together in Monte Carlo (2011), until the producers opted for younger leads.

Was shot as an R rated film but was edited down to PG-13 for its theatrical release.

It was Julia Roberts's idea for her character to wear plastic gloves when she's told her daughter is found dead in the dumpster and then to take them off in order to hold her daughter.
