Niranjan and Lancy overcome religious divides and familial opposition to forge a life together, united by their love and a shared aspiration to move to the USA. However, the arrival of their daughter, Nila, introduces unexpected challenges as they struggle to balance their ambitions with the demands of parenthood, leaving them feeling overwhelmed.

On Nila's third birthday, they visit an old age home, where they meet Jothi, a compassionate woman with a haunting past. A Tamil refugee who escaped the horrors of the Sri Lankan Civil War, Jothi has lost her family and now dedicates her life to caring for the elderly. Upon seeing Nila, she is reminded of the child she lost long ago. Niranjan and Lancy are captivated by Jothi's warmth and devotion, leading them to ask her to become Nila’s caretaker.

As Jothi integrates into their lives, Nila grows deeply attached to her, while her connection with her parents begins to weaken. Jothi, viewing Niranjan and Lancy as her own children, gently guides them, but they become increasingly consumed by their dreams of a future in America. By the time Nila turns five, Jothi realizes that Niranjan and Lancy are drifting further from their responsibilities as parents.

Concerned for Nila’s well-being, Jothi subtly tries to remind them of the importance of family, hoping to awaken their sense of duty. However, Niranjan and Lancy remain focused on their goals, dismissing Jothi's pleas. When Nila expresses her reluctance to part from Jothi, it creates tension between the couple. In a heartbreaking moment, they forcefully separate Jothi from Nila, accusing her of overstepping her role.
