This film is based on Arthur Golden's novel of the same name.
To prepare for their roles, the three leading non-Japanese actresses - Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, and Michelle Yeoh - were put through a six-week crash course on geisha culture through a "geisha boot camp", during which they were trained in traditional geisha practices of musicianship, dance, and tea ceremony.
Composer John Williams passed on scoring Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) in favor of scoring this film.
